Did some fishing this weekend. Lost more than I landed and all that blah. The real news was that this was the first weekend that new regs were in effect on the fly only zones of the Salmon River. Basically, people have to actually fly fish now, instead of chuck & ducking- at least, that's what the law says.
So I was curious as I made the drive north. Will crowds be down in the special regs ares? Will a lot of people be hung up in trees, since they've never had to fly cast before?
We found that high sticking gained a lot of popularity. Also that a lot of guys are still chucking a half ounce of lead. No DEC down there to enforce the new regs, of course. Crowds were there, but considering where we're at in the run, I didn't think they were too bad. Ain't often you can go to that river and have a preferred stretch of hydro to yourself all day long.
Elbow room is a beautiful thing. But better than that, is not even having to look at the ugly mugs of the kind of people a salmon run draws in.
You just stare at the water, watching your bobber float by, only having to look up every now and then to watch your back cast. Free reign of the bank for 100 yards in either direction. "No way it's the first weekend in October." I'd think to myself.
Who knows when the next trip will be. The high from this one should get me by till the Salmon are mostly gone, and the real fish come back....

Got Credit?
"The coolness is refreshing. It is indeed a golden autumn. All kinds of crudities have a chance to get rip this year. Was there ever such an autumn? And yet there was never such a panic and hard times in the commercial world. The merchants and banks are failing all the country over, but not the sand banks, solid and warm, and streaked with bloody blackberry vines. ... Invest in these country banks. Let your capital be simplicity and contentment. ... My crop is not their crop."
~Henry David Thoreau
October 14, 1857
In times like these, where shit is flying all over our faces as it's thrown into the fan by the "elite", we get to look back on the advice and wisdom from people who lived in a different era. Often, their words couldn't be closer to the truth. The (800)billion fucking dollar question, though, is why? Why don't we learn from the ghosts of our past?
No sense in giving a history lesson here, but fuck! Don't these people read books? Don't they see what happened before, and what was done to pull our country out of the dirt? I'm all for letting people and businesses try to make shitloads of fucking cash, but sometimes a little regulation ain't such a bad thing.
(When did the Republican Party become the Capitalist Party? And why haven't they changed their name yet?)
As much as I'd like to see a little regulation, I'd much rather see the system break. It's the only way these "conservatives", a.k.a, wolves in sheep's clothing, will be taught a lesson. Yes, let the banks fail. Let them take out the dominoes lined up behind them. Let's see how these folks fare without a mastercard in their wallet.
